Responding to the novels

Choose a short passage from your novel that made an impact on you as you read it, that made you stop and think maybe even say "Oh wow" to yourself.  It may have made you stop and think because you made a personal connection. It may have made you wonder and ask a question. It may have made you react in some emotional way to the words on the paper.  In your response, quote the passage and list the page number that it can be found on.  Explain, in detail, why you chose this passage, what reason did you have that made you stop and think or had you reacting in some way. Include your feelings and emotions as well as state any connections you made (text to self, text to text, text to world). An example  from another novel of how to start is this:

"Big signs were posted at the pool saying"No Jews or Dogs Allowed". pg 14
As I read this passage I couldn't believe that this could happen. How could the Jewish even be compared to dogs?"

  1. The whip cut into her bare thin back until it seemed as if her shoulder blades would crack under it. But she set her jaw and refused to cry out. page 23 No one should have to feel like that getting whipped everyday and still she was able to bear that pain that is amazing I think that slavery is so bad. First of all they rip the Black people away from their family and send them off to a different country so people can get work done faster. I think this is so cruel and bad the people who have done this should go to jail what do you think ??

  2. Page 82: "A tear glistened on her cheek, and she wiped it away. She later told a friend, " I looked at my hands to see if I was the same person now I was free." There was so much glory over everything. The sun came like gold through the trees and over the fields, and it felt like I was in heaven." I think that this passage was very important to the story because it proves what one would do to be free. To be enslaved for so many years, that would have felt amazing. I know it may not seem like much, but if you imaging being whipped and tortured and beaten for so many long years and to finally be free... the feeling must truly be like heaven. This passage has powerful language... powerful enough to create an image in your mind of what it was truly like to be there, on the safe soil of a slave free land. It really makes you feel what the character is feeling, and see what the character is seeing.

    1. @Rohan Lal I think that it is not in a different place because they have better laws and government. I don't understand why it would be in one place and not in another... its almost as if the place that does not have slavery should try to have more train stations and places for the people that are enslaved to be able to escape. They should just donate money to the slaves so they can get freedom papers. What else do you think they can do???

    2. @Rohan lal I think it's because some people realized that slavery is a very bad thing and that people can't own people. The other people wanted to continue getting nearly free labour and continued slaving people. If you were a slave master, slaving would be the only thing that you knew. If everyone else was doing one thing, and it saved you a lot of money, would you continue doing it?

  4. @Ben Deresh I agree yes that I would have slaves if everyone else was doing it but I would try to be nice to them and only have a few slaves at a time I don't think just beating them up will do anything to make them work harder and why do slave master beat up there slaves???

    1. I think that beating up there slaves is a regular thing to them, They don't think of them as people. They beat them to get them to work with out rebelling. To get it into there minds that there is no chance to escape. To slave masters there slaves are animals. It costs less to but a knew slave then to buy the food an medication one needs to live. I also think that being nicer to your slaves might actually help more and get them to work better. Why do you think Harriet would go back forth across the border so many times? If you escaped would you continue to head back to save more people?

    2. @BenD I would probably go back to save more people because it would help with changing the laws about slavery, I also think that Harriet already knows the way to the underground railroad But I wouldn't take a lot of people at a time because the masters would get worried that all there slaves were escaping. What do you think???

    3. @Bean Deresh I think she kept going back to get more people because she felt true freedom when she first made it across. I think if I made it across I would go back for my family and close friends so they could have that true freedom as well. She really isn't being careful with going back and forth... she's taking big risks. But they are good risks... for she's taking them for the freedom of her people. Would you guys keep on going back???

    4. I agree Harriet did know all the hiding spots from trips to the woods with her dad. I also think that I would travel back so save my family and friends. I also would't take a lot of people. It would be way to big of a risk. When the masters realized that they were losing slaves nearly all the time, they would probable do something. Why do you think that other slaves wouln't try to escape like Harriet did. They don't need her there. They just need to pick a night were the masters are busy. What do you think?

    5. @Lemon pie I probable would go back, but not a lot of times. I would be extremely careful. If i was found then I obviously would not able to save anyone. If the people would not start there own rebellion then people wouldn't escape. I don't think Harriet would have tried to do that if she didn't hear about the other person doing the same thing.

  5. @Bean Deresh and @Rohan Lal I don't think I would do it even if everyone else was doing it. I can see why people owned slaves at the time... it probably got stuff done faster. But they didn't have to beat and torture them... that part I think is pointless. Slave masters and slave mistresses probably beat up their slaves to get them to work faster and be more efficient.

    1. @Lemon Pie I also don't think I would beat the slaves I might even move to where there was no slavery. I also think beating the slaves was pointless. Just like how Harriet got ingered and now has her sleeping spells. Now harriet is that much of a worse worker.

    2. @Bean Deresh I agree with you. Because she got hit with that thing that he threw at her, she has sleeping spells. I don't understand why someone would throw like a weight at her head. I know she was a slave and and was trying to escape to her freedom, but you just don't DO that! If the guy who threw the thing was actually smart, he would think "Hey, if I throw this thing at her head she might get hit and have serious brain damage and won't be able to work anymore." But he threw it anyway!
